1. Introduction to Care Funding

You or someone you care for might need long term care and support for many different reasons. Sometimes this may be because of a disability or a mental condition, or getting older, or a combination of these.

There are two types of care funding you or the person you care for might be entitled to:

1.1 Social Care
This is provided by your local Council (social services) and is means tested. This means that you may have to make a contribution towards your care after a financial assessment.

Social care needs are the ‘needs of daily living’. This might be things like washing, dressing, getting around and looking after yourself.

1.2 Health Care
Is provided by the NHS and is free at the point of use.

Health care needs focus on the treatment, prevention, or management of illness, disease, or injury and the care and aftercare of this. This might be things like managing a gastrostomy (feeding tube) or catheter, supporting breathing and giving medications.
